A highly secretive species, it is often detected only by its distinctive, rattling song delivered from deep within thorny scrub or hedgerows. As a long-distance migrant, it winters in Africa and India, navigating thousands of kilometers annually. It is insectivorous, but will also take berries and other soft fruit.
