The Gray Francolin (Ortygornis pondicerianus) is a sturdy, ground-dwelling bird native to the plains and drier regions of South Asia. It is easily identified by its finely barred, grayish-brown plumage and a distinct, cream-colored throat encircled by a thin black border. Its camouflage allows it to blend seamlessly into dry scrub and open grasslands. Primarily terrestrial, these birds are fast runners, preferring to scurry through the undergrowth rather than fly. They forage for seeds, grains, and insects. Males averaging 29-34 cm and females averaging 26-30 cm. The males weigh 260-340 g, weight of the females is 200-310 g.
