The ruddy shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea), affectionately known in India as the Brahminy duck, is a migratory waterfowl that winters in the wetlands of the Indian Subcontinent. It is easily recognized by its bright orange-brown (ruddy) plumage and a creamy-buff head. In flight, it reveals a spectacular contrast of white wing coverts and black flight feathers. During the breeding season, males are distinguished by a narrow black ring around their necks. These ducks are often found in pairs or small groups along riverbanks and large lakes. In Buddhist and Hindu folklore, they are symbols of fidelity because pairs are said to remain together for life.
