The black-winged stilt (Himantopus himantopus) is a strikingly elegant wader common across the wetlands of the Indian Subcontinent. It is immediately recognizable by its incredibly long, thin, bright pinkish-red legs which are the longest in proportion to body size of any bird except the flamingo. Its plumage is a clean contrast of white underparts and a jet-black mantle and wings. Equipped with a long, needle-like black bill, these birds forage in shallow water, picking at aquatic insects, mollusks, and crustaceans. They are often seen in small, noisy groups and are known for their loud, yapping "pip-pip-pip" calls.
