The Indian pond heron (Ardeola grayii) is a small, stocky heron ubiquitous across the wetlands and waterbodies of the Indian Subcontinent. Often called the "paddybird", it is a master of camouflage; when at rest, its earthy-brown and buff plumage blends seamlessly into muddy banks and dried vegetation. However, when it takes flight, it reveals a startling flash of bright white wings and tail, creating a dramatic transformation. They are patient hunters, standing motionless for long periods before striking at fish, frogs, or insects.
