Indian Scops Owls (Otus Bakkamoena)

The Indian scops owl (Otus bakkamoena) is a species of owl native to South Asia. The Indian scops owl is a small 23-25 cm owl, although it is one of the largest of the scops owls. This nocturnal raptor is a master of "disruptive coloration". Its feathers feature a complex tapestry of grey, brown, and buff streaks that mimic tree bark so perfectly that it can hide in plain sight during the day. Unlike many of its cousins, it possesses dark brown or maroon eyes, giving it a deep, mysterious expression beneath its prominent, feather-tufted "ears".
