The black-winged kite (Elanus caeruleus vociferus), also known as the black-shouldered kite, is a small diurnal bird of prey best known for its habit of hovering over open grasslands in the manner of smaller kestrels. This South Asian subspecies is recognized by its snowy white underparts, pale grey wings, and the sharp, black shoulder patches. It has piercing ruby-red eyes set in a dark mask that gives it a fierce, focused expression. Equipped with long, pointed wings, it excels at "wind-hovering", remaining nearly stationary in the air while scanning for rodents or large insects. Once prey is detected, it descends in a silent, controlled drop.
