The Indian peafowl (Pavo cristatus) is native to the Indian subcontinent. It is famous for the male’s spectacular iridescent train. These feathers, marked with vibrant "eyespots", are fanned out in a shimmering display to attract females during courtship. A male peafowl or peacock has an average bill to tail length of 100-120 cm and 200-230 cm to the end of a fully grown train. It weighs 4.1-5.2 kg. These omnivorous birds inhabit scrub forests and agricultural lands, feeding on seeds, insects, and small reptiles. Their loud, resonant calls are iconic sounds of the Indian wilderness, often signaling the arrival of rain or the presence of predators.
