Sloth Bear (Melursus ursinus), Ranthambore National Park
The sloth bear (Melursus ursinus), or Indian bear, is a shaggy, forest-dwelling insectivore uniquely adapted to the Indian subcontinent. Instantly recognizable by its long, unkempt black fur, a cream-colored "V" or "Y" mark on its chest, and remarkably long, ivory-colored claws, it lacks the upper incisor teeth. This dental gap, combined with a hollow palate and floppy lips, allows the bear to act as a powerful "vacuum", sucking up termites and ants with a loud, distinct huffing sound. In regions like Ranthambore, tigers generally give these bears a wide berth, as they stand their ground with fierce vocalizations and powerful swipes of claws.
