Mother and Baby Gray Langur
In many langur troops, the birth of a new member is a community event involving a fascinating behavior called allomothering, or "aunt-parenting". Within just hours of birth, the mother often allows other females in the troop (both related and unrelated) to handle, groom, and carry her infant. This sharing of duties allows the mother more time to forage for the high-energy leaves she needs to produce milk. In addition, young, inexperienced females get the chance to practice essential mothering skills before having their own offspring.
