Male Nilgai, Ranthambore National Park
The height of Niglai is 100-150 cm at the shoulder; males weigh 109-288 kg, and the lighter females 100-213 kg. Despite their large size, they are incredibly swift runners, capable of outspacing many predators across the open plains. Their name, meaning "blue cow", has historically granted them a sacred status in Hindu culture, which has helped protect them from hunting.
