Indian Sambar (Rusa unicolor unicolor), Ranthambore National Park

Unlike many other deer species, the Indian sambar does not have a spotted coat as an adult. Instead, it sports a uniform, shaggy coat of coarse hair that is usually dark brown or charcoal in color. This thick fur provides protection against both the thorny undergrowth of the jungle and the chilling temperatures of higher altitudes. Their antlers are exceptionally thick and rugged, typically following a simple three-tined pattern. These antlers are not just for display; they are heavy weapons used in "clash" fights where stags use their massive neck strength to shove rivals.
