The Rock Bee or Giant Honey Bee (Apis dorsata) is one of the largest honey bees in the world, native to South and Southeast Asia. Measuring up to 20 mm, these bees are known for their impressive single-comb nests that can exceed 1.5 meters in width. Unlike other species, they build "open" nests suspended from high cliffs, tall trees, or even urban buildings. Highly defensive, they protect their hive using a collective "shimmering" behavior - a coordinated wave across the bee curtain to deter predators. They are also remarkable long-distance migrants, traveling hundreds of kilometers seasonally.
