The painted stork (Mycteria leucocephala) is a large wader in the stork family. It is found in the wetlands of the plains of tropical Asia south of the Himalayas in the Indian subcontinent and extending into Southeast Asia. It is easily recognized by its heavy, yellow down-curved bill and orange-red bare facial skin. Its predominantly white plumage is accented by a black breast band and distinctive pink tertial feathers, which give the bird its "painted" name. These storks forage in shallow waters using a tactile technique, sweeping their partially open bills side-to-side to snap up fish. They nest in large, noisy colonies atop trees.
