The Blue Rock Thrush (Monticola solitarius) is a solitary and elegant songbird found across southern Europe, North Africa, and Asia. True to its name, which translates to "solitary mountain dweller," it prefers rocky terrain, cliffs, and coastal ravines, though it often perches on urban ruins. The male is unmistakable with its deep blue-grey plumage and contrasting dark wings, while the female is more subdued with brownish-grey tones and scaly underparts. Known for its melodious, flute-like song, this bird is an omnivore, feeding on insects, small reptiles, and berries. The blue rock thrush is the official national bird of Malta.
