Checkerboard Mesa, Zion National Park, Utah, USA
This famous mountain was originally named Checkerboard Mountain by Preston P. Patrow, the 3rd superintendent of Zion. Standing at 2,033 m (6,670 feet), it was named for its checkerboard appearance caused by horizontal cross-bedding of ancient sand dunes and vertical cracking due to expansion and contraction of the sandstone during winter.
