"Memento Mori", Pompeii
This emblema is one of the most striking for the clarity of its allegorical representation. The topic presents death as the great leveller who cancels out all differences of wealth and class. The weight is death (the skull) bellow which are a butterfly (the soul) and a wheel (fortune). Symbols of wealth and power are on the left and poverty on the right arms of the level.
Now it is in the Naples National Archaeological Museum
