Black-and-White Ruffed Lemurs (Varecia variegata), Vakôna Lemur Island

In 2006, two endangered species of lemur were reintroduced back into the park. The aim was to take lemurs from threatened areas where habitat loss means the incumbent population is unsustainable, and relocate them to the relative safety of the Analamazaotra Special Reserve. By 2014, three groups comprising 26 diademed sifaka and 8 black-and-white ruffed lemurs were reintroduced into the park. Lemur Island is a small private reserve, owned by Vakôna Forest Lodge, with habituated lemur species including: Bamboo Lemur, Black and White Ruffed Lemur, Brown Lemur and Diademed Sifaka.
