The common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis bengalensis), also known as the Eurasian kingfisher or river kingfisher, is a small, brilliantly colored bird that frequents the lakes and streams of Ranthambore. This specific subspecies, bengalensis, is slightly smaller and brighter than its European counterparts. It is easily recognized by its metallic cobalt-blue back and wings, which contrast sharply with its bright orange-rufous underparts and white neck patches. This kingfisher is a precision hunter, hovering briefly before diving like a turquoise arrow into the water to catch small fish or aquatic insects. It possesses specialized eyes that allow for clear vision underwater.
