Pied Kingfisher (Ceryle Rudis) in Flight
The pied kingfisher (Ceryle rudis) is a species of water kingfisher widely distributed across Africa and Asia. It is a medium-sized waterbird easily recognized by its bold black-and-white mottled plumage and prominent crest. Unlike many other kingfishers, it lacks iridescent blues or greens, relying instead on high-contrast patterns. It is unique for its specialized hunting technique: it can hover mid-air over water for extended periods before diving vertically to snatch prey. This ability allows it to hunt in large, open lakes.
