The mugger crocodile (Crocodylus palustris), also known as the marsh crocodile, is a medium-to-large crocodilian native to freshwater habitats across the Indian Subcontinent. It is easily distinguished by its broad, blunt snout - resembling that of an alligator - which is the widest of any living crocodile. Adults typically grow to 34 m in length and can weigh over 250 kg. Their olive-brown skin is heavily armored with bony scales called scutes, providing camouflage in murky riverbanks and marshes. Muggers are versatile predators, eating fish, turtles, and mammals.
