The gray heron (Ardea cinerea) is a majestic, large-scale wading bird widely distributed across the wetlands of the Indian Subcontinent. It is easily identified by its long, "S"-shaped neck, slate-gray plumage, and a distinctive black stripe extending from the eye to the long, slender crest. Its powerful, dagger-like bill is yellowish, turning brighter during the breeding season. The gray heron is a large bird, standing up to 100 cm tall and 84-102 cm long with a 155-195 cm wingspan. The body weight can range from 1.02 to 2.08 kg. They are patient predators, waiting for hours to strike at fish, frogs, or small mammals with lightning speed.
