Male Chital (Axis axis), Ranthambore National Park
The Chital (Axis axis), also known as the Spotted Deer or Axis Deer, is the most beautiful and iconic herbivore of the Indian wilderness. Characterized by a golden-fawn coat adorned with permanent white spots that persist throughout their lives, they provide a stunning contrast to the rugged greens of the forest. Males are distinguished by their impressive, three-tined antlers, which they shed annually, while both sexes possess a white throat patch and a dark stripe running down the spine.
