Chital Bucks Sparring, Ranthambore National Park
Juvenile Chital use play to develop the physical skills and muscle memory they will need for survival as adults. It helps them master the technique of antler-locking without the risk of serious injury. They learn how to use their neck muscles to absorb the force of a push. Play-sparring often transitions into "stotting" or "pronking" (leaping into the air with all four legs), which trains them to be agile enough to escape a tiger later in life.
