Indian Leopard Yawning, Jawai Bandh Leopard Conservation Reserve
Leopards spend up to 18-20 hours a day resting to conserve energy. Yawning is a physical trigger that helps their body transition from a state of deep rest to "hunting mode". A deep yawn increases the intake of oxygen and helps expel carbon dioxide, slightly boosting the leopard's heart rate. It also stretches the facial and jaw muscles, ensuring the leopard's massive gape is ready for a hunt or for defense.
