Indian Leopard in a Cave, Jawai Bandh Leopard Conservation Reserve

The latest government report regarding the status of leopards in India estimated a total population of 13,874 individuals, 721 of them in Rajasthan. Jawai is famous for having one of the highest densities of leopards in the world, living in non-forested, rocky terrain. Estimated population in Jawai region is between 60 to 70 leopards within a relatively small radius of roughly 25-30 km. The concentration in Jawai is remarkably high because the granite hills (kopjes) provide hundreds of natural caves, and the lack of larger predators (like tigers) allows leopards to be the undisputed apex hunters.
