Female Indian Leopard (Panthera pardus fusca)
In Jawai, the Indian leopard has adapted into a unique "rock-dwelling" predator. Physically, these cats possess immensely powerful shoulder muscles and specialized scapula attachments, allowing them to scale near-vertical granite cliffs with ease. Their golden-yellow fur, patterned with tight black rosettes, provides flawless camouflage against the sun-drenched, billion-year-old rocks. Unlike forest leopards, Jawai’s population is often diurnal, lounging openly on high ridges. This behavioral shift, combined with their incredible horizontal leaps of over 6 meters, makes them the undisputed kings of this rugged, cave-filled terrain.
