The Rabari People of Jawai - Rajasthan, India

The people who live in the Jawai region of Rajasthan are primarily the Rabari community. They are an indigenous, semi-nomadic pastoral tribe that has lived in harmony with the local wildlife, most notably leopards, for centuries. The Rabari are traditional shepherds and cattle herders (sheep and goats, cows and buffaloes). Their identity is deeply tied to the rugged granite hills of Jawai. What makes the Jawai Rabaris famous worldwide is their peaceful coexistence with leopards. They consider leopards to be sacred protectors or messengers of their deities (like Lord Shiva). Even if a leopard kills their livestock, they rarely retaliate, viewing it as a "sacrifice" or an offering to the gods. Their daily life involves moving their herds across the rocky landscape to find grazing ground.
