Treaty of Kadesh (Egyptian-Hittite Peace Treaty), Precinct of Amun-Re, Karnak

The wall contains the text of the peace treaty that Ramesses II signed with the Hittites in the year 21 of his reign. The peace treaty was recorded in two versions, one in Egyptian hieroglyphs, the other in Hittite, using cuneiform script; both versions survive. The two language versions are worded differently. While the majority of the text is identical, the Hittite version says the Egyptians came suing for peace and the Egyptian version says the reverse. The treaty was given to the Egyptians in the form of a silver plaque, and this "pocket-book" version was taken back to Egypt and carved into the temple at Karnak.
