Shoreline and Boat Houses of Herculaneum
It was long thought that nearly all of the inhabitants had managed to escape. It wasn't until 1982, when the excavations reached boat houses on the beach area, that this view changed. In the suburban area, archaeologists discovered several hundred skeletons huddled close together on the beach and in 12 boat houses facing the sea. Further excavations in the 1990s confirmed that at least 300 people had taken refuge in those chambers, while the town was almost completely evacuated.
